Scottrade is both online and offline branch broker that also offers banking services, investment education, and trading platforms. Scottrade’s standard trading platform allows you to obtain real-time quotes, conduct research with charting, and provides live account monitoring.
Scottrade began as Scottsdale Securities in 1980 in Scottsdale, Arizona. It since moved to its new HQ in St. Louis, Missouri in 1981. Scottrade’s biggest claim to fame would be its signature $7 stock commission which was introduced in 2005. By 2010, it is now the proud parent of over 500 US branches.
I’ve been doing business now for approximately 1 1/2 years (after a recommendation from a long time friend who uses them) and I have to tell you, I am duly impressed by the whole organization. From the minute I walk in the door (or if I call) everyone is very eager to please and assist. I usually do wire transfers, and occasionally ask pertinent questions about trading, and they are always patient with me being the not so savvy trader. Today was no different. I not only went in to process a wire transfer, but also to set up checking and a transfer of my previous employer 401k rollover transfer to Scottrade so as to avoid fees and also better manage my retirement portfolio, since I already grew my established ST portfolio by 40% and my Fidelity portfolio was performing “marginally”. They (the ST staff) was very patient and very helpful in the process and even offered me a “carrot” of free trades for the considerable sum I was transferring over to my ST account. I can’t speak highly enough of Scottrade and their staff. I highly recommend them if you are considering “getting your feet wet” in investing with this type of firm.
